Personal Impact: Maintaining Integrity Under Pressure to Deliver

During a due diligence project for a private equity client, my manager pressured me to 'smooth' some of the volatility in the target company's churn data to make the investment look more attractive. The client was eager to close, and my firm wanted the success fee. I knew that misrepresenting this data could lead to a disastrous investment. I navigated the pressure by focusing on 'Consultant as Trusted Advisor' rather than 'Order-Taker.' I sat down with the manager and showed that if the client discovered the volatility post-acquisition, our firm’s reputation—and our future business with this $50B fund—would be permanently damaged. I proposed an alternative: we would present the volatile data but include a 'Value Creation Plan' showing exactly how we could stabilize churn post-close. The manager agreed. We presented the honest data to the client; they appreciated the transparency and actually hired us for a six-month follow-on engagement to implement the stabilization plan. This reinforced that the highest form of personal impact is protecting the client's long-term interest, even when it creates short-term friction.
