Technician/Engineer – Helium Leak Detection Instruments & Systems
*Location:* Ronkonkoma, New York
*Department:* Service
*Reports To:* Service Manager
*Position Summary*
Vacuum Instruments Corporation (VIC) is seeking a motivated and hands-on *Service Technician* to install, troubleshoot, repair, calibrate, and maintain helium leak detection instruments and custom leak testing systems at customer facilities throughout North America.
This position requires strong mechanical aptitude, electrical troubleshooting skills, and the ability to work independently while delivering outstanding customer service. Technicians receive extensive product training and work with advanced leak detection technologies used in the automotive, aerospace, medical device, HVAC, semiconductor, and industrial manufacturing industries.
*Service technicians typically earn 30–40% above their base salary through overtime and travel compensation.*
*Essential Responsibilities*
* Install, commission, and validate helium leak detection equipment and automated leak testing systems.
* Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and calibration of leak detection instruments.
* Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and vacuum systems.
* Analyze system performance and identify root causes of equipment issues.
* Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, and technical documentation.
* Conduct functional testing and verify equipment performance after repairs.
* Train customer personnel on proper operation and basic maintenance of equipment.
* Prepare accurate service reports documenting work performed and recommendations.
* Communicate technical findings to customers and internal engineering and service teams.
* Maintain service tools, calibration equipment, and company vehicle.
* Follow all company safety policies and customer site safety requirements.
* Support equipment installations and startup projects at customer facilities.
*Qualifications*
*Required*
* Associate degree or technical training in Electronics, Electrical Technology, Mechanical Technology, Mechatronics, Industrial Maintenance, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
* Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
* Ability to use electrical test equipment such as multimeters.
* Ability to read electrical and mechanical drawings.
* Good computer skills (Microsoft Office and Windows-based software).
* Excellent communication and customer service skills.
* Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
* Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
* Ability to work independently and manage multiple service assignments.
*Preferred*
* Experience servicing industrial equipment.
* Experience with vacuum systems, pumps, or leak detection equipment.
* PLC troubleshooting experience.
* Pneumatic and electro-mechanical troubleshooting.
* Industrial manufacturing or field service experience.
* Knowledge of mass spectrometry or helium leak testing (training provided if needed).
*Travel Requirements*
* Travel approximately *50–70%*, primarily within US.
* Overnight and weekend travel is expected depending on customer schedules.
* Flexibility to work overtime and weekends when supporting customer installations or emergency service calls.
*Physical Requirements*
* Frequently stand, bend, kneel, and work around industrial equipment.
* Lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
* Work in manufacturing environments while following all required PPE and safety procedures.
* Ability to work from ladders or elevated platforms when necessary.
