MISSSEY, works to prevent girls and gender-expansive youth from ever entering circumstances of sexual exploitation and violence. Position Summary

MISSSEY seeks an experienced Finance & Operations Director to provide enterprise-level leadership over the organization’s financial management, human resources systems, and operational infrastructure. Reporting directly to the Executive Director and serving as a core member of the senior leadership team, this role exercises independent judgment, policy interpretation, and decision-making authority to ensure organizational sustainability, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence.

This position is comparable in scope to a senior public-sector management classification, overseeing complex systems, supervising professional staff, and serving as the primary advisor to executive leadership on finance, people systems, and organizational risk.

The Finance & Operations Director leads through both strategy and execution, ensuring that systems operated by internal staff and external partners meet high standards of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement. The role partners closely with the Executive Director, Programs Director, Board Treasurer, funders, and government agencies to align infrastructure with MISSSEY’s mission and long-term growth.

Core Responsibilities
1. Financial Management & Fiscal Oversight (40%)
Serve as the organization’s chief internal authority on financial systems, internal controls, and fiscal compliance.
Oversee the maintenance of official records and documentation, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Oversee day-to-day financial operations performed by staff and external accounting partners, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions.
Ensure that all financial transactions, including federal grant funding, restricted and unrestricted donations, and operating revenue are properly tracked and recorded by members of the finance team.
Plan, coordinate, and manage the annual financial audit, federal Single Audit, and Form 990 preparation processes in partnership with external auditors and tax professionals, including preparation and review of reconciliations, financial schedules, supporting documentation, process narratives, and responses to auditor inquiries and ad hoc requests.
Supervise all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), regulatory requirements, and audit requirements.
Collaborate with the Executive Director in the development of grant application budgets, organizational operating budgets, and financial reports for funders and the MISSSEY Board of Directors.
Ensure timely, accurate monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial reporting.
Lead the development, monitoring, and refinement of organizational budgets in partnership with executive leadership.
Prepare and present financial analyses, forecasts, and risk assessments to the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
Monitor cash flow, reserves, and funding pipelines; proactively identify risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
Oversee contract and vendor financial management.
Lead audit preparation, fiscal monitoring visits, and funder financial reporting.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, county, city, and funder fiscal requirements.
Partner with the Programs Director to ensure alignment between program operations, budgets, and reporting obligations.
Exercise independent judgment and discretion on matters of financial policy, compliance interpretation, and operational controls.
2. Human Resources Oversight & People Systems (25%)
Provide senior oversight and quality assurance for HR functions carried out by the Human Resources Generalist.
Ensure HR policies, procedures, and practices remain current, legally compliant, and consistently implemented.
Advise executive leadership and managers on performance management, employee relations, and corrective action processes.
Monitor compliance with employment law and coordinate with legal counsel as needed.
Support the development of equitable, trauma-informed, and values-aligned workplace systems.
Serve as a strategic advisor on people systems, workforce planning, and organizational culture.
3. Operations, Infrastructure & Risk Management (20%)
Provide executive oversight of administrative and operations staff responsible for facilities, IT coordination, invoicing, and internal systems.
Establish and maintain strong internal workflows, documentation standards, and cross-department coordination.
Oversee facilities, leases, insurance coverage, and organizational risk management practices.
Maintain emergency preparedness plans and safety protocols.
Lead technology and data management strategy in coordination with consultants as needed.
Drive continuous improvement of operational systems to support organizational growth and program expansion.
4. Organizational Leadership & External Relations (15%)
Serve as a senior member of MISSSEY’s leadership team, contributing to organizational strategy and long-range planning.
Partner with the Executive Director on infrastructure planning, budgeting strategy, and organizational sustainability.
Act as MISSSEY’s primary operational representative with City, County, State, and Federal agencies.
Represent the organization in external meetings related to finance, operations, and compliance.
Collaborate closely with the Programs Director to ensure program delivery systems meet contractual and regulatory standards.
Model MISSSEY’s values internally and externally.
Stay updated on nonprofit regulations and governance standards
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in nonprofit management, business, finance, or related field preferred.
Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in nonprofit finance, operations, and/or administration.
Demonstrated experience overseeing financial systems, budgets, and reporting.
Working knowledge of human resources policies, benefits administration, and employment law compliance.
Experience creating and strengthening organizational systems and internal controls.
Experience and familiarity with work environments that serve Black girls, gender-expansive youth, and youth of color impacted by violence, exploitation, and homelessness.
