Job Description
WHAT IS BOX?
Box (NYSE:BOX) is the leader in Intelligent Content Management. Our platform enables organizations to fuel collaboration, manage the entire content lifecycle, secure critical content, and transform business workflows with enterprise AI. We help companies thrive in the new AI-first era of business. Founded in 2005, Box simplifies work for leading global organizations, including JLL, Morgan Stanley, and Nationwide. Box is headquartered in Redwood City, CA, with offices across the United States, Europe, and Asia.
By joining Box, you will have the unique opportunity to continue driving our platform forward. Content powers how we work. It's the billions of files and information flowing across teams, departments, and key business processes every single day: contracts, invoices, employee records, financials, product specs, marketing assets, and more. Our mission is to bring intelligence to the world of content management and empower our customers to completely transform workflows across their organizations. With the combination of AI and enterprise content, the opportunity has never been greater to transform how the world works together and at Box you will be on the front lines of this massive shift.
WHY BOX NEEDS YOU
The Governance team's mission is to transform the way critical business content is governed in the cloud in order to reduce regulatory, legal, and compliance risk for our customers. Governance is the highest revenue-yielding add-on product at Box and our work is in the critical path of Box's success with high visibility from both inside and outside the company. We help our customers solve the immensely complex problem of meeting regulatory compliance at scale, in a way that does not negatively impact their ability to run the business. None of this can happen without top-of-the-line engineers, who are not only exceptional technologists but also strong communicators who are collaborative and easy to work with.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Design, build, and operate Java-based microservices that enforce data retention and legal hold policies
Collaborate with US and Poland teams to deliver features end to end, including code reviews, testing, and on-call participation.
Implement reliable, observable services for large-scale, compliant data workflows across cloud infrastructure.
Contribute to front-end integrations and UI touchpoints (approximately 20%) to enable complete governance experiences.
Partner with product and platform teams to translate compliance requirements into resilient technical designs.
Improve system reliability and performance through instrumentation, capacity planning, and incident response.
Explore and prototype AI-driven approaches where appropriate to enhance governance capabilities.
Document designs, standards, and operational runbooks to support sustainable ownership.
Participate in our on-call rotation, available at all times while on-call to help respond to and triage any issues that arise
WHO YOU ARE
Experienced backend engineer with strong Java skills and production experience building microservices.
Knowledgeable in distributed systems fundamentals (e.g., scalability, consistency, fault tolerance) and data platform concepts.
Comfortable with cloud platforms; GCP preferred, AWS or similar experience welcome.
Familiar with or open to learning front-end technologies (e.g., React/Node) to support UI needs.
Practitioner of engineering best practices: testing, code quality, CI/CD, and observability.
Effective collaborator with clear communication skills across time zones and functions.
Ownership mindset with experience participating in on-call rotations and operating production services.
Curious and growth-oriented, with interest in applying AI experimentation to real-world problems.
