Founding Engineer - Fullstack
Avea Robotics
San Francisco, CAFull Time
Job Description
About Avea Robotics
Avea's mission is to build the deployment infrastructure for the future of robotics and Physical AI. We've raised $1M from Third Kind VC, Afore Capital, and LeapYear VC.
At Avea, you'll be working with a world-class engineering team from UIUC, building software to help companies deploy robots in the real-world.
The Role
As a Founding Full Stack Engineer, you will own and build the cloud and application platform that powers Avea.
This is not a marketing website + CRUD backend company. Our platform is mission-critical infrastructure sitting between humans, robots, and real-world operations. Security, reliability, and observability are non-negotiable.
What You’ll Do
You will:
Design and implement backend services and APIs
Stand up and operate AWS-based infrastructure in production
Build secure authentication/authorization and enforce principled access control
Own infrastructure-as-code (CDK or Terraform)
Make rigorous tradeoffs around cost, scale, reliability, and operational complexity
Design networking and service architectures for real-time systems
Own security posture, logging/metrics/tracing, and observability workflows
Deploy and operate production APIs, dashboards, and internal tools
Work directly with the founders to define product and platform direction
Help define technical direction and, as we grow, build and lead the platform function
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for someone with hands-on experience operating production systems—someone who can design, ship, and run reliable infrastructure with strong security and observability.
Strong experience with:
Backend development and API design
AuthN/AuthZ and security best practices
AWS in production environments
Infrastructure-as-code (CDK preferred, but not required)
Cost awareness and architectural tradeoffs
Python, Go, or similar backend languages
Networking fundamentals (TCP/UDP, NAT, firewalls, etc.)
Production operations: monitoring, incident debugging, observability discipline
Bonus points for:
Real-time or WebRTC-based systems
Early-stage startup experience
Exposure to compliance-heavy environments
Why This Role Is Special
Founding ownership: Define how the platform is built from day one
High trust: You’ll be the expert; we rely on your judgment
Massive surface area: Infra, security, backend, networking, product
In-person collaboration: Work side-by-side with founders (SF strongly preferred)
Leadership trajectory: Grow into leading the platform function as we scale
Compensation & Logistics
Competitive salary + meaningful equity
Location flexible; in-person SF strongly preferred
Direct collaboration with founders; build the core platform powering real robots
