Job Description
The role serves as a technical bridge between core transactional systems (ERP, QMS, document control, CRM) and downstream reporting and analytics teams, establishing standardized data access patterns, integration interfaces, and governance controls. In addition to traditional database administration duties, this position leads the design and implementation of data services, integration patterns, and platform standards that reduce system coupling and improve data consistency across the enterprise.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Functions - Data Platform & Database Engineering
Administer, support, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server environments (on-prem and/or cloud-hosted), ensuring availability, performance, scalability, and security.
Design and implement database solutions including schema design, indexing strategies, stored procedures, functions, and data archival approaches.
Proactively monitor database platforms for performance, reliability, and capacity using SQL-native and approved third-party monitoring tools.
Develop, implement, and test backup, recovery, and disaster-recovery strategies in accordance with OSII standards.
Apply patches, service packs, and version upgrades with minimal business disruption.
Partner with infrastructure and security teams to support platform-level availability, recovery, and compliance objectives.
System Integration & Data Services
Document and support systems integration and architecture, by making design recommendations and decisions with IT management, enhancing data flow and accuracy between key systems, and reducing direct database dependencies between systems.
Support and contribute to API- and integration-based data exchange between enterprise platforms (ERP, QMS, document control, CRM).
Collaborate with integration and application teams to optimize data flows, performance, and reliability across system boundaries.
Assist in defining and enforcing standards for data interfaces, integration error handling, and operational supportability.
Provide database and data services expertise for integration platforms and tooling (e.g., ETL, middleware, SSIS, API-backed data services).
Data Governance & Security
Enforce database security best practices including role design, least-privilege access, auditing, and compliance with regulatory requirements such as SOX.
Support data governance initiatives by implementing technical controls for data access, retention, and traceability.
Maintain clear documentation for schemas, data access patterns, integration interfaces, and platform standards.
Business Intelligence & Analytics Enablement
Provide stable, performant, and governed data sources for BI and reporting teams.
Partner with report writers and analytics teams to support:
query performance optimization
curated reporting schemas
data quality and consistency across source systems
Assist in designing data structures and access patterns that support self-service reporting while protecting transactional systems.
Collaboration & Operational Excellence
Participate in cross-functional IT initiatives, providing data platform and integration expertise throughout the project lifecycle.
Follow established change control, incident response, and release management processes.
Mentor junior team members and promote best practices in database and data platform engineering.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Formal Education & Certification
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
5+ years of experience in database engineering or administration within a mid-to-large enterprise environment.
Microsoft SQL Server certifications preferred.
ITIL Foundations or Project Management certification is a plus.
Knowledge & Experience
Strong expertise in Microsoft SQL Server (2016 and newer), including SSMS, T-SQL, indexing, and performance tuning.
Experience with high availability and disaster recovery technologies (e.g., Always On Availability Groups, clustering, replication, log shipping).
Proficiency in T-SQL scripting and query optimization.
Experience with data modeling and relational design best practices.
Working knowledge of integration and data movement technologies (e.g., SSIS, APIs, middleware, ETL tools).
Familiarity with Azure SQL, PowerShell, and automation is a plus.
Experience supporting ERP, manufacturing, or other business-critical enterprise systems preferred.
Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with application, integration, and analytics teams.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Occasional after-hours support for maintenance windows or critical incidents.
Minimal travel required.
Ability to sit for extended periods; occasional walking, bending, and lifting of equipment (up to 40 lbs)
