Job Description
*Company Overview*
KVAL Inc. is a rapidly growing manufacturer of heavy industrial machinery for the door industry. Established in 1947 and owned by a private family, we pride ourselves on stability, tradition, and innovation as we expand our support team to meet evolving technological needs.
*Job Summary*
Kval builds the machines that cut, machine, and assemble doors, and our Software Engineering team writes the software that runs them. The stack is a C# WPF desktop application built on Prism and ReactiveUI, a tool-path engine written in Rust, PostgreSQL databases, and the control software on the machines themselves. Our current focus is KvalCAM 5.0, a platform-level rewrite of our main product, and that is where a new engineer would start.
We are a small engineering team with no separate QA group and no layer between you and the people who depend on what you ship. The software you write runs machines on our own shop floor, and your work ends up as a finished door rather than a metric on a dashboard. You will own components end to end, from specification through tested, shipped code, and you will move between projects as priorities shift. That suits some engineers very well and frustrates others, and it is worth knowing which one you are before you apply.
*What you will do*
* Own defined components of KvalCAM from specification through tested, shipped code
* Write clean, testable C# that follows the patterns established in the codebase
* Build and maintain automated tests, including regression tests
* Work in the WPF application layer, built on Prism and ReactiveUI
* Contribute to PostgreSQL database work including schema changes, queries, and migrations
* Debug and troubleshoot across the application and, over time, into the machine control layer
* Document what you build
* Learn Kval's controls environment and its machine-specific edge cases
* Participate in iterative development and team planning
* Utilize approved AI-assisted development tools (e.g., IDE integrations) to support coding tasks, under engineer supervision
* Adhere to all safety protocols and PPE requirements
*Required qualifications*
* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
* 4 to 7 years of professional software development experience
* Strong production C#, including automated testing, with demonstrated ownership of non-trivial components
* Experience building desktop applications in C#
* Strong relational database and SQL skills, including schema design and migrations
* Experience contributing to a large, long-lived codebase and extending existing patterns rather than replacing them
* Experience carrying work through testing and release yourself rather than handing it to another group
* Clear written and verbal communication, and the discipline to work independently without close supervision
*Preferred qualifications*
* Experience on a small engineering team where engineers own work across the full lifecycle
* Experience with industrial automation, machine controls, CAD/CAM, or embedded systems
* Computational geometry or tool-path generation background
* Experience with WPF and MVVM, including view model design, data binding, and dependency injection
* Production experience with Prism or a comparable composite application framework
* Production experience with ReactiveUI, Rx.NET, or another reactive framework
* Rust experience welcome but not required. Our tool-path engine is written in Rust
* F# experience or functional programming background in another language
* Production experience with PostgreSQL
* Experience with systems that operate offline or with intermittent connectivity
* Build and release scripting, including automated builds, packaging, and installers
Pay: $100,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
Benefits:
* 401(k) 4% Match
* Employee assistance program
* Health insurance
* Paid time off
* Referral program
Application Question(s):
