Software Engineering Manager, Real-Time Defense Software
Binghamton, New York

Full time, onsite. Occasional domestic travel and periodic extended hours based on program requirements.

Compensation: $150,000 to $180,000 per year

This Software Engineering Manager role provides technical leadership for a team developing real-time software solutions supporting critical defense programs. The company designs and builds software for defense, aerospace, and simulation applications, with relocation assistance available for qualified candidates. This position is approximately 80% hands on technical work and 20% people management, suited to an engineer who wants to stay close to the code while also developing a team.

The role involves providing technical leadership throughout the software development lifecycle, designing and developing software using C, C++, Python, and/or C#, and guiding modernization of legacy systems to improve performance, maintainability, and long term reliability. You will collaborate with systems, hardware, integration, and program teams, lead technical reviews and architecture discussions, and troubleshoot complex challenges involving real time, embedded, and mission critical systems. This position also supports software planning activities such as Basis of Estimates (BOEs), Integrated Master Plans (IMP), and Integrated Master Schedules (IMS), and promotes engineering best practices through code reviews and technical mentoring. On the people side, you will coach and mentor engineers, conduct performance reviews, support staffing and recruiting, and help sustain a collaborative engineering culture, along with supporting proposal efforts and process improvements.

Required Qualifications

Active DoD Secret or higher security clearance, with investigation completed within the past 5 years
U.S. citizenship required
Ability to obtain required Special Access authorizations
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent experience
8+ years of professional software development experience
2+ years providing technical leadership, team leadership, or engineering supervision
Hands on programming experience in one or more of the following: C, C++, Python, C#
Experience developing software for defense, aerospace, embedded, simulation, or other real time applications
Experience supporting software planning activities, including BOEs, IMPs, and IMS
Strong understanding of Agile, Scrum, Waterfall, or hybrid development methodologies
Ability to support occasional travel and extended work schedules as program needs require
